Configure notifications for your community
Notifications bring members back to the conversation. As an owner, you set the defaults; members fine-tune their own preferences in the community app.
1. Set community notification defaults
- Go to Admin → Engagement → Notifications.
- Choose which events notify members by default: new messages in channels, replies in threads, reactions, DMs, mentions, and challenge updates.
- Save. These defaults apply to new members on join.
2. Balance reach with restraint
Over-notifying is the fastest way to push members to mute everything. Default to mentions, DMs, and thread replies — let members opt into high-volume channel alerts.
- Keep high-traffic channels off by default.
- Keep DMs and mentions on — these are personal and rarely ignored.
3. Let members control their own settings
Members manage personal notification preferences in their account settings inside the community app. They can mute individual channels, enable mentions only, or turn on everything. Your defaults are the starting point, not a lock.
4. Enable PWA push (white-label)
If you've installed your community as a branded PWA (white-label), members get push notifications on their device. Encourage members to Add to Home Screen during onboarding so push works.
5. Tie notifications to engagement
Pair notifications with rituals and challenges: when the daily ritual posts or a weekly challenge updates, members who opted in get pulled back automatically.
Verify
Post a test message and mention yourself from a second account, then confirm the notification arrives.
